What are Omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are among the essential nutrients and fulfil vital jobs in the body.

The most important Omega-3 fatty acids are as follows:

  • Alpha linolenic acid (ALA)
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)#
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

EPA and DHA have the greatest biological activity, which is why they absolutely must be consumed regularly. EPA and DHA can be found in fish oils, whilst DHA can also be extracted from special microalgaes. ALA on the other hand includes the Omega-3 fatty acids gained from vegetable oils.
